The calculation is designed for rectangular areas and rectangular pavers. It evaluates the paver layout in both orientations, includes the selected joint spacing, and rounds purchasing quantities up so the result is expressed in complete pavers and packages.

The result provides more than a basic square-footage estimate. Depending on the values entered, it can show:

How to Calculate How Many Pavers You Need
- Measure the project area. Enter the finished length and width of the patio, path, or driveway. Select the correct unit beside each measurement.
- Enter the actual paver size. Use the physical length and width of one paver rather than relying only on a nominal product name.
- Add the joint gap. Enter the planned spacing between adjacent pavers. Check the product instructions or laying specification for the correct value.
- Choose a waste allowance. Extra material covers edge cuts, breakage, colour selection, unusable offcuts, and possible future repairs.
- Add package information if known. Enter the number of pavers in one box or pallet to estimate how many complete packages must be ordered.

Paver Calculation Formula
For a rectangular project, the first step is to calculate the surface area:
Project area = project length × project width
The joint gap is added to the paver dimensions when estimating how many units fit along each direction:
Effective paver length = paver length + joint gap
Effective paver width = paver width + joint gap
The calculator determines the number of pavers across the project length and width and rounds each directional count up to a whole unit. It also checks the paver after a 90-degree rotation. The orientation requiring fewer pieces is used for the base estimate.
Base pavers = pavers along project length × pavers along project width
The waste percentage is then applied:
Total pavers = round up [base pavers × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100)]
If package and price values are entered:
Boxes or pallets = round up (total pavers ÷ pavers per package)
Estimated paver cost = total pavers × price per paver
Rounding up is essential because a fraction of a paver or package normally cannot be purchased as a usable whole item. Supplier packaging rules may differ, so confirm whether partial pallets, layers, or individual units are available.
Worked Paver Calculation Example
Suppose a rectangular patio measures 20 feet by 12 feet. The selected pavers measure 8 inches by 4 inches, the planned joint gap is 0.125 inch, and the waste allowance is 10%. Each pallet contains 120 pavers, and one paver costs $1.75.
Project area: 20 ft × 12 ft = 240 ft²
Convert the project dimensions to inches for comparison with the paver dimensions:
20 ft = 240 in, and 12 ft = 144 in
Effective paver dimensions:
8 + 0.125 = 8.125 in
4 + 0.125 = 4.125 in
Using the more efficient orientation, approximately 30 pavers fit along the 20-foot direction and 35 rows fit along the 12-foot direction after directional counts are rounded up.
Base pavers: 30 × 35 = 1,050
Pavers including 10% waste: 1,050 × 1.10 = 1,155 pavers
Pallets required: 1,155 ÷ 120 = 9.625, rounded up to 10 pallets
Estimated paver cost: 1,155 × $1.75 = $2,021.25
This cost covers the calculated pavers only. Bedding sand, aggregate base, jointing sand, edging, excavation, drainage, delivery, taxes, equipment, and labour are separate project costs.
Choosing a Waste Allowance
A 10% allowance is a practical starting point for many straightforward rectangular installations. Lowe’s planning guidance also recommends purchasing 10% more pavers to cover cutting, breakage, and future repairs. However, the right allowance depends on the project rather than one universal percentage.
- Simple square or rectangular layout: A lower allowance may be adequate when dimensions match the paver module and few cuts are needed.
- Bordered or moderately complex layout: Consider additional waste for border cuts and transitions between patterns.
- Diagonal, herringbone, curved, or highly cut layout: A higher allowance may be appropriate because more edge pieces and offcuts can become unusable.
- Mixed-size paver system: Follow the manufacturer’s pattern chart or bundle coverage because a single-size calculation may not represent the required mix.
Keep a few matching pavers after installation when possible. A later production batch can differ slightly in colour or texture, making stored pieces useful for future repairs.
Measurement and Planning Tips
- Measure the finished paved surface, not only the excavated area.
- Use actual product dimensions when nominal and actual measurements differ.
- Keep all project, paver, and gap values in compatible units.
- Split an L-shaped area into rectangles, calculate each section, and add the quantities.
- Calculate borders separately when they use another paver size or orientation.
- Check the manufacturer’s laying pattern for multi-size bundles.
- Confirm package coverage, minimum order quantities, and return policies with the supplier.
- Check local requirements and locate underground utilities before excavation.
Limitations of the Estimate
This calculator is intended for preliminary material planning. It assumes a rectangular paved area and rectangular pavers arranged in a regular grid. Curves, circles, fan patterns, steps, borders, drainage channels, obstacles, and irregular edges can change the true quantity.
The result does not design the pavement structure or determine whether the selected paver, base depth, bedding material, drainage system, or edge restraint is suitable for pedestrians or vehicles. Ground conditions, climate, loading, compaction, and manufacturer specifications affect installation requirements.
