Worked Example

Suppose you want to estimate pavers for a rectangular patio with these details:

  • Area length: 12 ft
  • Area width: 10 ft
  • Paver length: 8 inches
  • Paver width: 4 inches
  • Joint gap: 0.125 inches
  • Waste allowance: 10%
  • Pavers per box / pallet: 100
  • Price per paver: $0.75

First, calculate the project area:

Project Area = 12 × 10 = 120 ft²

Convert the project dimensions into inches:

Project Length = 12 × 12 = 144 inches

Project Width = 10 × 12 = 120 inches

Add the joint gap to the paver dimensions:

Effective Paver Length = 8 + 0.125 = 8.125 inches

Effective Paver Width = 4 + 0.125 = 4.125 inches

Estimate one possible layout:

Pavers Along Length = 144 ÷ 8.125 = 17.72, rounded up to 18

Pavers Along Width = 120 ÷ 4.125 = 29.09, rounded up to 30

Base Pavers = 18 × 30 = 540 pavers

If the rotated layout uses fewer pavers, the calculator may use that more efficient orientation. For example, if the selected layout needs 525 base pavers, then:

Waste Pavers = 525 × 10 ÷ 100 = 52.5 pavers

Total Pavers = 525 + 52.5 = 577.5, rounded up to 578 pavers

If each box contains 100 pavers:

Boxes Needed = 578 ÷ 100 = 5.78, rounded up to 6 boxes

If each paver costs $0.75:

Estimated Paver Cost = 578 × 0.75 = $433.50

Assumptions and Limitations

This Paver Calculator provides a planning estimate for simple rectangular paving areas. It assumes consistent paver dimensions, a consistent joint gap, and a basic layout orientation.

Actual paver quantity can change because of borders, edge restraints, curves, diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, basketweave patterns, running bond patterns, circular features, steps, drains, utility covers, corners, cut pieces, broken pavers, and unusable offcuts.

The joint gap affects the layout count because each paver occupies its own face size plus spacing. A larger joint gap can reduce the number of pavers needed across the area, while a smaller joint gap can increase the count slightly.

This calculator estimates pavers only. It does not calculate bedding sand, jointing sand, gravel base, geotextile fabric, edging, spikes, compaction depth, excavation, drainage slope, sealant, delivery, labor, equipment, taxes, or installer markup. For driveways, load-bearing surfaces, drainage-sensitive areas, or final ordering, confirm the layout with a qualified landscaper, paving contractor, engineer, or supplier.
