Mulch Calculation Method

Bed area = length × width × number of beds

Mulch volume = bed area × mulch depth

When the depth is entered in inches:

Depth in feet = depth in inches ÷ 12

To include extra material:

Total volume = base volume × (1 + extra allowance ÷ 100)

Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27

Bags needed = total volume ÷ volume per bag

Round the result up to the next whole bag.

Example

Suppose two garden beds are each 12 ft long and 8 ft wide. The mulch will be 3 inches deep, with a 10% extra allowance.

Bed area = 12 × 8 × 2 = 192 ft²

Depth = 3 ÷ 12 = 0.25 ft

Base volume = 192 × 0.25 = 48 ft³

Total volume = 48 × 1.10 = 52.8 ft³

Cubic yards = 52.8 ÷ 27 = 1.96 yd³

If each bag contains 2 ft³:

Bags needed = 52.8 ÷ 2 = 26.4

Round up to approximately 27 bags.

Important Notes

• Measure only the area that will actually be covered.
• Split irregular beds into smaller rectangular sections and add their volumes.
• Existing mulch, slopes, uneven ground, settling, and irregular edges may affect the required amount.
• Check the bag volume shown on the product packaging.
• A mulch depth of approximately 2 to 4 inches is commonly recommended, depending on the material and planting area.
• Keep mulch away from plant stems and tree trunks to reduce moisture and disease problems.
