How the RPM Calculator Works
The calculator follows the path from the engine, through the drivetrain, to the wheels and finally to road speed.
1) Engine RPM and Wheel RPM
The engine turns faster than the wheels when the drivetrain reduces speed through gearing.
Engine RPM = Wheel RPM × Overall gear ratio
This means:
- a higher overall gear ratio gives more engine RPM at the same wheel RPM
- a lower overall gear ratio gives less engine RPM at the same wheel RPM
2) Wheel RPM and Vehicle Speed
Once you know the wheel RPM, vehicle speed depends on how far the tire travels in one revolution.
Tire circumference is:
Circumference = π × tire diameter
Then vehicle speed is based on wheel RPM multiplied by that rolling distance.
For mph with tire diameter in inches, the standard relationship is:
Vehicle speed = Wheel RPM × Tire diameter × π × 60 / 63360
Where:
- 60 converts minutes to hours
- 63360 is the number of inches in a mile
Why Tire Size Changes RPM
This is one of the most useful things the calculator shows.
If tire diameter increases, the tire covers more road distance in each wheel revolution. That means the wheels do not need to spin as fast to maintain the same road speed.
So at the same speed and same gear ratio:
- bigger tires lower engine RPM
- smaller tires raise engine RPM
Assumptions and Important Notes
- This calculator uses overall gear ratio, meaning the total ratio from engine to wheel.
- Tire diameter should reflect the actual rolling tire size you want to model.
- The result is a mathematical estimate and does not account for converter slip, clutch slip, tire growth, tire deformation, or real-world drivetrain losses.
- A larger tire diameter lowers RPM at the same speed, while a higher overall gear ratio raises RPM at the same speed.
Worked Example
Suppose you want to estimate engine RPM at 60 mph with:
- Overall gear ratio: 4.00
- Tire diameter: 24 in
Step 1: Find tire circumference
Circumference = π × 24 ≈ 75.40 in
Step 2: Find wheel RPM from road speed
Vehicle speed = Wheel RPM × Tire diameter × π × 60 / 63360
Rearranging gives wheel RPM of about 840 rpm.
Step 3: Find engine RPM
Engine RPM = Wheel RPM × Overall gear ratio
Engine RPM ≈ 840 × 4.00 = 3360 rpm
This example shows why both gear ratio and tire diameter matter when converting speed to RPM.
