Helium Balloons Calculator

Estimate how many helium balloons are needed to lift a selected payload weight.

Enter the total payload weight you want the balloons to lift.

The calculator treats the balloon as roughly spherical.

g

Use 0 if you want to ignore balloon and string weight.

Precaution: This is an estimate. Real lift depends on balloon shape, helium purity, air density, temperature, altitude, leakage, and tied string weight.

Use this Helium Balloons Calculator to estimate how many helium-filled balloons are needed to lift a lightweight payload. Enter the payload weight, inflated balloon diameter, and weight of one balloon including its string or ribbon.

Helium Balloon Calculation Method

The calculator treats each round balloon as approximately spherical.

Radius = diameter ÷ 2

Balloon volume = (4 ÷ 3) × π × radius³

For a simplified planning estimate:

Gross helium lift ≈ balloon volume in litres × 1 g/L

Net lift per balloon = gross lift − balloon and string weight

Balloons needed = payload weight ÷ net lift per balloon

The final balloon count is rounded up to the next whole balloon.

Example

Suppose you want to lift a 200 g payload using 30 cm diameter balloons. Each balloon and string weighs about 3 g.

Radius = 30 ÷ 2 = 15 cm

Volume = (4 ÷ 3) × π × 15³ ≈ 14.1 L

Gross lift ≈ 14.1 g

Net lift = 14.1 − 3 = 11.1 g per balloon

Balloons needed = 200 ÷ 11.1 ≈ 18.0

Round up to approximately 19 balloons.

Important Notes

  • The 1 g/L lift value is a simplified planning estimate rather than an exact physical constant.
  • Actual lift varies with air density, altitude, temperature, pressure, helium purity, balloon shape, and inflation level.
  • Include the weight of ribbon, string, clips, tape, and other attachments.
  • For shaped or foil balloons, manufacturer helium-volume data is usually more reliable than a spherical estimate.
  • Helium gradually leaks from balloons, so available lift can decrease over time.
  • Do not use party balloons to lift people, animals, hazardous objects, or safety-critical loads.
