Age Difference Calculator

Enter two dates of birth to find the exact age gap between them.

Inputs

Age difference (Y, M, D)
Age difference (years, approx.)
Total months difference
Total days difference
Who is older?

Important Note : Exact age gap is shown in calendar years, months, and days. Total days uses straight date duration, and approximate years is a simplified duration view.

Use this Age Difference Calculator to find the exact age gap between two dates of birth. It shows the difference in calendar years, months, and days, plus total months, total days, approximate years, and which person is older.

What This Age Difference Calculator Calculates

This calculator compares two dates of birth and returns:

  • Exact age difference in years, months, and days
  • Approximate age difference in years
  • Total months difference
  • Total days difference
  • Who is older

It is useful for everyday age-gap questions, family age comparisons, genealogy notes, birthdays, and general date-difference checks.

How the Age Difference Calculator Works

This page compares two dates and expresses the gap in more than one way.

1) Exact Calendar Difference

The exact age gap in years, months, and days is a calendar-style result. It is not just the total number of days divided by 365.

To find it by hand, you subtract the earlier date from the later date like long subtraction:

  • subtract days first
  • if needed, borrow days from the previous month
  • subtract months next
  • if needed, borrow 1 year and add 12 months
  • subtract years last

This is why leap years and month lengths matter for exact Y/M/D differences.

2) Approximate Years

The page also shows an approximate years result. This is a simplified duration view rather than the exact calendar-style Y/M/D result.

That makes it helpful when you want one quick number, but it should not be confused with the exact calendar gap.

3) Total Months and Total Days

Total months and total days express the same date gap in single-unit form.

These are often easier to compare than the mixed calendar form, especially when users want one overall duration instead of separate years, months, and days.

Assumptions and Important Notes

  • This calculator compares two calendar dates, not two timestamps with hours and minutes.
  • The exact Y/M/D result is a calendar difference, not a decimal-year conversion.
  • Total days and approximate years may not look identical to the exact Y/M/D result because they express the gap in different ways.
  • Date-difference tools can differ depending on whether they count the start date as day 0 or choose to include the end date, so it is helpful to state the counting rule clearly.
  • Leap years and the varying lengths of months affect exact age-gap calculations.

Worked Example

Suppose Person 1 was born on November 15, 2006 and Person 2 was born on March 10, 2026.

Step 1: Subtract the days
15 cannot be subtracted from 10 directly, so you borrow from the previous month.

Step 2: Borrow the correct number of days from the previous month
Since the calculation moves from March back into February, you add the number of days in February for that year.

Step 3: Subtract months
If the month value becomes negative, you borrow 1 year and add 12 months.

Step 4: Subtract years
After borrowing is handled, the remaining years can be subtracted normally.

Using the standard long-subtraction approach, the exact gap comes out to 19 years, 3 months, and 23 days.

How to Use This Age Difference Calculator

  1. Enter Person 1’s date of birth.
  2. Enter Person 2’s date of birth.
  3. Click Calculate to see the age gap.
  4. Review the exact Y/M/D result first, then use approximate years, total months, or total days if you want a simpler single-number view.

How to Interpret the Result

Age difference (Y, M, D) is the most exact calendar-style answer.

Approximate years is a simplified duration summary.

Total months difference is useful when comparing longer spans in one unit.

Total days difference is useful when you want the full gap as a straight duration count.

Who is older tells you which person’s birth date is earlier.

Practical Uses of an Age Difference Calculator

  • compare two birthdays exactly
  • find sibling or partner age gaps
  • check family-tree or genealogy records
  • convert date-of-birth gaps into months or days
  • understand the difference between exact calendar age and approximate duration
