Use this Age Difference Calculator to find the age gap between two dates of birth in years, months, and days. It also shows approximate years, total months, total days, and which person is older.
Age Difference Calculation Method
The calculator first identifies the earlier and later birth dates. The person with the earlier date of birth is older.
The exact age difference is calculated using calendar years, months, and remaining days:
Age difference = later date − earlier date
If the later day is smaller than the earlier day, days are borrowed from the previous calendar month. If necessary, one year is borrowed and converted into 12 months.
Total days represents the straight number of elapsed days between the two dates, while approximate years converts that duration into a decimal-year value.
Example
Suppose Person 1 was born on August 20, 2000 and Person 2 was born on January 5, 2005.
August 20, 2000 is the earlier date, so Person 1 is older.
After applying calendar subtraction, the age difference is:
4 years, 4 months, and 16 days
Person 1 is therefore older than Person 2 by 4 years, 4 months, and 16 days.
Important Notes
- Calendar months have different numbers of days, so exact years, months, and days cannot be found reliably by dividing total days by 365.
- Leap years can add an extra day to a date range.
- Total days, total months, approximate years, and exact calendar years/months/days are different ways of expressing the same date gap.
- If both birth dates are identical, the age difference is zero and neither person is older.
- For legal age limits, school eligibility, immigration, insurance, or other official purposes, follow the counting rules required by the relevant organization.
