Drywall Calculator
Estimate drywall sheets, total board area, purchased coverage, waste allowance, and optional material cost for walls and ceilings.
Results
This estimate is for simple rectangular rooms. It does not subtract doors, windows, openings, closets, soffits, angled ceilings, or complex cutouts. For irregular spaces, calculate each section separately and add extra waste where needed.
Drywall Calculator
The Drywall Calculator helps estimate how many drywall sheets may be needed for walls and ceilings in simple rectangular rooms. It uses room length, room width, wall height, number of same-size rooms, ceiling option, drywall sheet size, waste allowance, and optional price per sheet to estimate drywall quantity and cost.
This calculator is useful for planning drywall installation, room renovation, basement finishing, garage walls, partition walls, ceiling work, and material takeoff. It estimates wall area, optional ceiling area, waste area, sheets needed, purchased coverage, and extra coverage after rounding up to full sheets.
What This Drywall Calculator Calculates
This calculator estimates drywall sheet quantity based on the room dimensions and sheet size you enter. It can help you plan material needs before buying drywall boards or comparing sheet sizes.
- Drywall sheets needed
- Drywall area needed
- Base board area before waste
- Wall area
- Ceiling area when included
- Waste area added
- Coverage per sheet
- Total purchased coverage
- Extra coverage after rounding
- Estimated sheet cost when price per sheet is entered
How to Use the Drywall Calculator
- Enter the room length and select feet or meters.

Drywall Calculator Formula Table
| Calculation | Formula | What It Means |
|---|---|---|
| Wall Area Per Room | Wall Area = 2 × Wall Height × (Room Length + Room Width) | Finds the gross wall area of one rectangular room. |
| Total Wall Area | Total Wall Area = Wall Area Per Room × Number of Rooms | Finds the wall drywall area for all same-size rooms. |
| Ceiling Area Per Room | Ceiling Area = Room Length × Room Width | Finds the ceiling area when ceiling drywall is included. |
| Total Ceiling Area | Total Ceiling Area = Ceiling Area Per Room × Number of Rooms | Finds the ceiling drywall area for all same-size rooms. |
| Base Board Area | Base Board Area = Total Wall Area + Total Ceiling Area | Finds the drywall area before waste allowance. |
| Waste Area Added | Waste Area = Base Board Area × Waste Allowance ÷ 100 | Adds extra drywall for cuts, offcuts, broken sheets, and fitting loss. |
| Drywall Area Needed | Drywall Area Needed = Base Board Area + Waste Area | Finds the final estimated drywall coverage needed. |
| Coverage Per Sheet | Coverage Per Sheet = Sheet Length × Sheet Width | Finds the area covered by one drywall sheet. |
| Drywall Sheets Needed | Sheets Needed = Drywall Area Needed ÷ Coverage Per Sheet, rounded up | Finds how many full drywall sheets should be purchased. |
| Total Purchased Coverage | Purchased Coverage = Sheets Needed × Coverage Per Sheet | Shows the total board coverage after buying full sheets. |
| Extra Coverage After Rounding | Extra Coverage = Purchased Coverage − Drywall Area Needed | Shows the estimated leftover coverage caused by rounding up to full sheets. |
| Estimated Sheet Cost | Cost = Sheets Needed × Price Per Sheet | Estimates material cost when price per drywall sheet is entered. |
Worked Example
Suppose you want to estimate drywall for one rectangular room with these details:
- Room length: 15 ft
- Room width: 12 ft
- Wall height: 8 ft
- Number of same-size rooms: 1
- Include ceiling: Yes
- Drywall sheet size: 4 ft × 8 ft
- Waste allowance: 10%
- Price per sheet: $14
First, calculate the wall area:
Wall Area = 2 × 8 × (15 + 12) = 432 ft²
Next, calculate the ceiling area:
Ceiling Area = 15 × 12 = 180 ft²
Now calculate the base board area:
Base Board Area = 432 + 180 = 612 ft²
Add a 10% waste allowance:
Waste Area = 612 × 10 ÷ 100 = 61.2 ft²
Drywall Area Needed = 612 + 61.2 = 673.2 ft²
A 4 ft × 8 ft drywall sheet covers:
Coverage Per Sheet = 4 × 8 = 32 ft²
Now calculate sheets needed:
Sheets Needed = 673.2 ÷ 32 = 21.04
Since drywall is purchased in full sheets, round up:
Drywall Sheets Needed = 22 sheets
If each sheet costs $14:
Estimated Sheet Cost = 22 × 14 = $308
In this example, the project may need about 22 drywall sheets before considering fasteners, joint compound, tape, corner bead, delivery, taxes, labor, or special installation details.
Assumptions and Limitations
This Drywall Calculator provides a planning estimate for simple rectangular rooms. It assumes straight walls, a consistent wall height, a flat ceiling when included, and the selected drywall sheet size.
The estimate uses gross wall and ceiling area. It does not automatically subtract doors, windows, closets, alcoves, soffits, angled ceilings, stair openings, built-in cabinets, fireplaces, arches, columns, or complex cutouts. If these areas are significant, measure them separately and adjust the material estimate manually.
The waste allowance helps cover cuts, offcuts, broken boards, fitting loss, measurement differences, and layout changes. Simple rooms may need less waste, while rooms with many corners, openings, soffits, ceiling cuts, or unusual shapes may need more.
This calculator estimates drywall sheets and optional sheet cost only. It does not estimate screws, nails, joint compound, tape, corner bead, adhesive, primer, texture, sanding supplies, delivery, equipment, disposal, permits, taxes, or labor. For fire-rated assemblies, moisture-resistant boards, sound-rated walls, garage separation, ceilings, or code-sensitive work, confirm board type, thickness, fastening pattern, and installation requirements with a qualified contractor or local building authority.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a drywall calculator?
A drywall calculator is a tool that estimates how many drywall sheets may be needed for walls and ceilings. It uses room dimensions, sheet size, ceiling option, number of rooms, and waste allowance to estimate sheet quantity and cost.
How do I calculate drywall sheets needed?
To calculate drywall sheets needed, find the total wall and ceiling area, add waste allowance, then divide by the coverage area of one drywall sheet. Round the result up because drywall is purchased in full sheets.
Should I include the ceiling?
Include the ceiling if you are installing drywall on the ceiling as part of the project. Select walls only if the ceiling is already finished or does not require drywall.
Does this calculator subtract doors and windows?
No. This calculator uses gross wall area and does not automatically subtract doors, windows, or other openings. For a more detailed estimate, calculate large openings separately and adjust the total manually.
What drywall sheet size should I choose?
Choose the sheet size that matches the product you plan to use. Common sizes include 4 ft × 8 ft, 4 ft × 10 ft, 4 ft × 12 ft, and 54 in × 12 ft. Larger sheets may reduce seams but can be harder to carry and install.
How much waste allowance should I use for drywall?
A waste allowance helps cover cuts, offcuts, broken boards, layout changes, and mistakes. A simple rectangular room may need less waste, while rooms with many openings, corners, soffits, or ceiling cuts may need more.
Does this calculator include joint compound and screws?
No. This calculator estimates drywall sheets and optional sheet cost only. Joint compound, tape, screws, corner bead, primer, texture, delivery, and labor should be estimated separately.
