Weight Price Comparison
Compare two products by price per chosen weight amount.
Inputs
Example: compare per 100 g, per 1 kg, per 1 lb, or per 1 oz.
Results
Step-by-step derivation
References
- General retail math: unit price = price ÷ quantity.
- Mass conversions: 1 kg = 1000 g; 1 lb = 453.59237 g; 1 oz = 28.349523125 g.
Use this Weight Price Comparison Calculator to compare two products by their price per equal amount of weight. Products can use different package sizes and weight units.
Weight Price Comparison Method
First, convert both product quantities to the same weight unit.
Unit price = product price ÷ product quantity
For a specific comparison amount:
Price per comparison amount = unit price × comparison amount
The product with the lower price for the same weight is the better value based on unit price.
Common weight conversions include:
- 1 kg = 1,000 g
- 1 lb = 453.59237 g
- 1 oz = 28.349523125 g
Example
Suppose Product A costs $8.00 for 500 g and Product B costs $12.00 for 800 g.
Compare both products per 100 g.
Product A = $8.00 ÷ 500 × 100 = $1.60 per 100 g
Product B = $12.00 ÷ 800 × 100 = $1.50 per 100 g
Product B is the better value by unit price because it costs $1.50 per 100 g compared with $1.60 per 100 g for Product A.
Important Notes
- Compare products using the same weight amount.
- The calculator supports grams, kilograms, pounds, and ounces.
- Enter the actual price you expect to pay if a coupon or discount applies.
- A lower unit price does not necessarily mean the product is the better overall choice.
- Quality, ingredients, freshness, package waste, shipping, taxes, and whether you will use the entire product are not included.
