Ergonomic Setup Guidance
| Guideline | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Keyboard and mouse near elbow height, with elbows around 90โ110ยฐ. | Helps keep shoulders relaxed and reduces reaching. |
| Wrists straight and in line with the forearms. | Helps avoid awkward wrist extension while typing or using a mouse. |
| Chair height adjusted so feet are supported and thighs feel comfortable. | Supports seated posture and reduces pressure behind the knees. |
| Monitor top near or slightly below eye level. | Helps reduce neck bending and uncomfortable viewing angles. |
| For standing work, desk or keyboard surface near standing elbow height. | Supports a neutral standing typing position. |
Use this Desk Height Calculator to estimate starting ranges for chair, desk, and monitor height based on your body height and whether you work sitting or standing.
Desk Height Calculation Method
For a seated workstation, the calculator uses:
Minimum desk height = 0.4739 ร body height โ 6.678
Maximum desk height = 0.5538 ร body height โ 9.427
Body height and the resulting desk height are measured in inches.
Other calculator estimates include:
Chair height โ 24.6% to 26.9% of body height
Sitting monitor top โ 69% to 72% of body height
For standing work:
Standing desk height โ 60% to 65% of body height
Standing monitor top โ 93.5% to 95% of body height
These are calculator-model starting ranges rather than fixed ergonomic requirements.
Example
Suppose your height is 68 inches.
Minimum sitting desk height = (0.4739 ร 68) โ 6.678 โ 25.55 in
Maximum sitting desk height = (0.5538 ร 68) โ 9.427 โ 28.23 in
The estimated sitting desk-height range is approximately 25.6 to 28.2 inches.
For standing:
68 ร 0.60 = 40.8 in
68 ร 0.65 = 44.2 in
The estimated standing desk range is approximately 40.8 to 44.2 inches.
Important Notes
- Use the calculated values as starting points rather than exact required heights.
- For typing, the keyboard and mouse should allow relaxed shoulders, elbows close to the body, and straight wrists.
- Adjust chair height so your feet are supported by the floor or a footrest.
- Monitor position should allow comfortable viewing without repeatedly bending the neck upward or downward.
- People of the same height can need different settings because arm, leg, and torso proportions vary.
- Chair cushions, footwear, keyboard trays, desk thickness, monitor size, and work tasks can change the ideal setup.
If workstation discomfort, numbness, tingling, weakness, or persistent pain continues after adjustments, consider advice from a qualified healthcare or ergonomics professional.
