Flooring Calculation Method

Base floor area = length × width × number of areas

Waste area = base floor area × waste percentage ÷ 100

Flooring needed = base floor area + waste area

Boxes or rolls needed = flooring needed ÷ coverage per package

Always round the package quantity up to the next whole box or roll.

When a price is entered:

Estimated cost = boxes or rolls needed × price per package

Example

Suppose two rooms are each 15 ft by 12 ft. Each flooring box covers 24 ft², the waste allowance is 10%, and each box costs $38.

Base area = 15 × 12 × 2 = 360 ft²

Flooring needed = 360 × 1.10 = 396 ft²

Boxes needed = 396 ÷ 24 = 16.5

Round up to 17 boxes.

Estimated cost = 17 × $38 = $646

Important Notes

• Use the exact coverage per box or roll shown on the product packaging.
• A waste allowance helps cover cuts, damaged pieces, installation errors, and unusable offcuts.
• Diagonal, herringbone, patterned, or irregular layouts may require additional material.
• Split irregular rooms into smaller rectangular sections and add their areas together.
• The estimate does not include underlayment, adhesive, trim, transitions, delivery, labour, or subfloor repairs.
