Words Per Minute (WPM) Calculator
Calculate speaking and reading time from a word count.
Inputs
Results
Speaking time
Reading time
Use this Words Per Minute Calculator to estimate how long a text may take to read or speak from its word count and selected WPM speed.
WPM Calculation Method
Speaking time = word count ÷ speaking WPM
Reading time = word count ÷ reading WPM
To convert the result:
Seconds = minutes × 60
Hours = minutes ÷ 60
WPM means words per minute. A higher WPM produces a shorter estimated time.
Example
Suppose a script contains 650 words.
At a speaking speed of 130 WPM:
Speaking time = 650 ÷ 130 = 5 minutes
At a reading speed of 200 WPM:
Reading time = 650 ÷ 200 = 3.25 minutes
3.25 minutes = 3 minutes 15 seconds
Important Notes
- Reading and speaking speeds vary between people.
- Text difficulty, language fluency, comprehension, and familiarity can affect reading speed.
- Speaking time can increase because of pauses, emphasis, breathing, slide changes, or audience interaction.
- Preset WPM values are planning estimates. Use a custom WPM if you know your own measured pace.
- For accurate speech, presentation, podcast, or voiceover timing, rehearse or record the complete script with a timer.
