This estimate is for a simple rectangular deck surface. Real decking needs can vary because of breaker boards, borders, picture-frame edges, diagonal layouts, stairs, damaged boards, butt-joint layout, joist spacing, board overhang, and manufacturer board dimensions.
A deck-board estimate depends on more than surface area. Board width, the gap between boards, purchased board length, installation direction and unavoidable offcuts all affect the quantity required. What the Decking Calculator Estimates
- Deck area: The rectangular surface area calculated from deck length and width.
- Board rows: The number of parallel rows needed across the deck.
- Boards per row: The number of purchased boards needed to complete one row.
- Base boards: The calculated board count before applying waste.
- Waste boards: Extra boards included for cutting, defects and unusable offcuts.
- Total boards: The rounded number of deck boards to purchase.
- Purchased board length: The combined linear length of all calculated boards.
- Estimated cost: Total boards multiplied by the optional price per board.
How to Estimate Deck Boards
- Measure the deck. Enter the finished length and width of the rectangular deck surface using the appropriate units.
- Enter the actual board width. Use the physical face width of the selected decking rather than relying only on its nominal product name.
- Enter the purchased board length. Choose a stock length that is actually available from the supplier.
- Add the board gap. Enter the spacing required by the manufacturer for the product and installation conditions.
- Select board direction. Indicate whether boards will run along the deck length or deck width.
- Choose a waste allowance. Extra material covers cuts, defects, damage, layout adjustments and future repairs.
- Add the price if needed. Enter the current cost of one board to calculate the estimated decking-board cost.
For irregular or multi-level decks, divide the surface into rectangular sections and calculate them separately. Borders, picture frames, breaker boards, steps and fascia should also be measured separately because they follow different directions or use different board types.
Decking Calculation Formulas
The rectangular deck area is:
Deck area = deck length × deck width
The installed width of one board row includes the board face and the gap beside it:
Effective board width = board width + board gap
The deck dimension perpendicular to the chosen board direction is the span covered by repeated rows:
Board rows = deck span ÷ effective board width
The dimension parallel to the boards is the run length:
Boards per row = board run length ÷ purchased board length
Rows and boards per row are rounded up because partial coverage still requires another row or purchased board.
Base boards = rounded board rows × rounded boards per row
Total boards = round up [base boards × (1 + waste percentage ÷ 100)]
Purchased board length = total boards × length of one board
When a unit price is entered:
Estimated board cost = total boards × price per board
Worked Decking Calculation Example
Suppose a rectangular deck is 16 feet long and 12 feet wide. The selected boards are 5.5 inches wide and 12 feet long. They will run along the 16-foot deck length with a 0.25-inch gap, a 10% waste allowance and a price of $18 per board.
Deck area: 16 × 12 = 192 ft²
Convert the effective board width to feet:
Effective board width: (5.5 + 0.25) ÷ 12 = 0.479 ft
Because the boards run along the 16-foot length, the 12-foot width is covered by repeated rows:
Board rows: 12 ÷ 0.479 = 25.05, rounded up to 26 rows
Each row must cover the 16-foot run using 12-foot boards:
Boards per row: 16 ÷ 12 = 1.33, rounded up to 2 boards
Base boards: 26 × 2 = 52 boards
Boards including 10% waste: 52 × 1.10 = 57.2, rounded up to 58 boards
Waste boards added: 58 − 52 = 6 boards
Purchased board length: 58 × 12 = 696 linear feet
Estimated board cost: 58 × $18 = $1,044
This cost covers the calculated deck boards only. It does not include framing, footings, posts, beams, joists, blocking, flashing, fasteners, railings, stairs, fascia, delivery, equipment or labour.
How Board Direction Changes the Estimate
Board direction determines which deck dimension is divided by board length and which is divided by effective board width. Rotating the boards by 90 degrees can change the number of rows, butt joints, boards per row and total waste even though the deck area remains unchanged.
Board Width, Gaps and Stock Lengths
Use actual board width because nominal dimensions may differ from the finished face. Gap requirements depend on material, moisture, temperature and the fastening system. Stock length also affects efficiency: shorter boards create more joints and offcuts, while longer boards may reduce joints. Compare available lengths and plan where every joint will land on framing.
Choosing a Waste Allowance
Waste covers end cuts, defects, damaged boards and unusable offcuts. A rectangular deck with straight boards and an efficient stock length may need a modest allowance, while diagonal patterns, borders, stairs and irregular edges usually require more. Keeping a few matching boards can also help with future repairs.

- Confirm the finished deck dimensions and board direction on a drawing.
- Use the manufacturer’s actual board width, length and required spacing.
- Plan butt joints, breaker boards, borders and overhang before calculating the final order.
- Verify that joist spacing supports the selected product and board orientation.
- Check local permit, structural, footing, guard, stair and attachment requirements.
- Follow approved fastening, ventilation, drainage and expansion instructions.
- Contact the appropriate utility-location service before excavating for deck footings.
Limitations of the Estimate
This calculator estimates decking for one rectangular surface using parallel rows. It does not design the deck structure or calculate joists, beams, posts, footings, ledgers, connections, fasteners, railings or stairs. It also does not automatically include picture-frame borders, breaker boards, fascia, diagonal layouts, openings, overhang or multiple board widths.

How do I calculate how many deck boards I need?
Divide the deck span by the board width plus gap to find rows. Divide the board run by the purchased board length to find boards per row. Multiply the rounded results, add waste and round up.
Should I include the gap between deck boards?
Yes. The gap contributes to the installed width of each row. Enter the spacing specified for the selected decking, fastening system and installation conditions.
Why does board direction change the result?
Rotating the boards changes the span covered by rows and the run covered by purchased board lengths. This can change rows, joints, boards per row and waste.
How much extra decking should I order?
The allowance depends on the layout. Straight rectangular decks may need less extra material than diagonal, bordered, stair-heavy or irregular designs. Follow the project plan and supplier guidance.
Does the calculator include deck framing?
No. It estimates surface decking and optional board cost only. Joists, beams, posts, footings, blocking, fasteners, railings and other structural materials require separate calculations.
Can I calculate an L-shaped deck?
Divide the L shape into rectangles, calculate each surface separately and add the results. Avoid counting any overlapping area twice, and plan borders or changes in board direction separately.
