Running Split Calculation

First convert the entered time to seconds:

Total seconds = hours × 3,600 + minutes × 60 + seconds

Average pace is:

Average pace = total time ÷ total distance

For example, if distance is entered in kilometers, the result is time per kilometer.

The time for a selected split length is:

Split time = average pace × split distance

Cumulative time at each checkpoint is:

Cumulative time = average pace × cumulative distance

Average Speed

Average speed is calculated from distance and elapsed time:

Average speed = distance ÷ time in hours

The result is shown as km/h or mph depending on the selected distance unit.

Worked Example

Suppose you run 10 km in 50 minutes and choose 2 km splits.

Convert the total time to seconds:

50 × 60 = 3,000 seconds

Average pace:

3,000 ÷ 10 = 300 seconds per km

300 seconds = 5:00 min/km

Time for each 2 km split:

5 minutes × 2 = 10 minutes

The even-pace cumulative targets would therefore be:

  • 2 km: 10:00
  • 4 km: 20:00
  • 6 km: 30:00
  • 8 km: 40:00
  • 10 km: 50:00

Average speed:

10 km ÷ (50 ÷ 60 hours) = 12 km/h

Final Partial Split

If the total distance is not evenly divisible by the selected split length, the calculator creates a shorter final split.

Remaining distance = total distance − completed full-split distance

Final split time = remaining distance × average pace

For example, a 10 km run divided into 3 km splits would contain three full 3 km splits followed by a final 1 km split.

Important Notes

  • The calculator assumes the same average pace across every split.
  • Actual runners do not need to maintain identical split times for the calculator result to be useful.
  • A negative split means completing the later part of a run faster than the earlier part; a positive split means slowing in the later part.
  • Hills, wind, heat, humidity, altitude, crowding, aid stations, fatigue, and fueling can make even pacing unrealistic.
  • Decide whether your entered total time includes stops. Moving time and elapsed time can produce different pace and split results.
  • GPS watches may measure a slightly different distance from an officially measured race course because of signal error and the path actually run.
  • When using miles and kilometers, keep distance and split units consistent. One international mile equals exactly 1.609344 kilometers.
