Use this Winning Percentage Calculator to calculate a team’s, player’s, or competitor’s win rate from wins, losses, and optional ties. The result is shown as both a decimal winning percentage and a standard percentage.

Winning Percentage Formula

For a record containing only wins and losses:

Winning percentage = wins ÷ (wins + losses)

To display the result as a percentage:

Win percentage = winning percentage × 100

For example, a decimal winning percentage of .600 is the same as 60%.

Winning Percentage With Ties

When the selected competition treats each tie as half a win and half a loss, use:

Tie-aware winning percentage = (wins + 0.5 × ties) ÷ (wins + losses + ties)

The total number of games is:

Games played = wins + losses + ties

This tie-aware method should be used only when it matches the rules of the sport, league, tournament, or fantasy platform.

Worked Example

Suppose a team has 18 wins and 12 losses.

Total games:

18 + 12 = 30 games

Winning percentage:

18 ÷ 30 = 0.600

Percentage format:

0.600 × 100 = 60%

The team therefore has a winning percentage of .600, or 60%.

Example With Ties

Suppose a team has 7 wins, 5 losses, and 2 ties, and each tie counts as half a win.

Effective wins:

7 + (0.5 × 2) = 8

Total games:

7 + 5 + 2 = 14

Tie-aware winning percentage:

8 ÷ 14 ≈ 0.5714

The record therefore has a tie-aware winning percentage of approximately .571, or 57.14%.

Important Notes

  • Winning percentage divides wins by total games counted; it does not divide wins by losses.
  • A .500 winning percentage means an even record under the selected method.
  • The result normally ranges from .000 to 1.000, equivalent to 0% through 100%.
  • Winning percentage is undefined when no games have been played.
  • The standard method ignores ties and uses wins plus losses as the denominator.
  • The tie-aware method assumes each tie counts as half a win. This rule does not apply to every competition.
  • Soccer and some other sports commonly rank teams using standings points rather than winning percentage.
  • The calculator does not account for overtime losses, forfeits, canceled games, strength of schedule, games behind, goal difference, head-to-head results, or other tiebreakers.
  • Equal winning percentages do not necessarily produce equal official standings positions.
  • Use the official league or tournament rules when rankings, seeding, qualification, or playoff positions matter.
