Notes

Enter any two of the first three values and the calculator will solve the third. Tax rates are treated as flat estimate rates.

Use this Lottery Tax Calculator to estimate how federal and state tax-rate assumptions may affect a lottery lump-sum cash payout. It also compares the cash option and estimated after-tax amount with the advertised jackpot.

Important: This calculator uses simple flat tax rates entered by the user. It does not calculate your final federal or state income tax liability.

Lottery Tax Calculation

The advertised jackpot may represent an annuity value rather than the amount available as an immediate cash payment.

Lump-sum percentage = lump-sum cash value ÷ advertised jackpot × 100

Estimated federal tax:

Federal tax = lump-sum cash value × federal tax rate ÷ 100

Estimated state tax:

State tax = lump-sum cash value × state tax rate ÷ 100

Total estimated tax:

Total tax = federal tax + state tax

Estimated amount remaining:

Net lump sum = lump-sum cash value − total estimated tax

The calculator also compares the final estimate with the advertised jackpot:

Net as % of jackpot = net lump sum ÷ advertised jackpot × 100

Worked Example

Suppose a lottery jackpot is advertised at $100,000,000, while the available lump-sum cash option is $50,000,000.

Assume you enter:

  • Federal tax estimate: 24%
  • State tax estimate: 5%

Lump-sum percentage:

$50,000,000 ÷ $100,000,000 × 100 = 50%

Estimated federal tax:

$50,000,000 × 24% = $12,000,000

Estimated state tax:

$50,000,000 × 5% = $2,500,000

Total estimated tax:

$12,000,000 + $2,500,000 = $14,500,000

Estimated net lump sum:

$50,000,000 − $14,500,000 = $35,500,000

Net amount compared with the advertised jackpot:

$35,500,000 ÷ $100,000,000 × 100 = 35.5%

Under these simplified assumptions, the estimated after-tax cash amount is $35.5 million.

Federal Withholding vs. Final Tax

For qualifying U.S. lottery winnings, current IRS rules generally require 24% federal withholding when lottery proceeds exceed the applicable withholding threshold.

However, withholding is not necessarily the winner’s final federal tax liability. Lottery winnings are taxable income, and the final amount owed can depend on total income, filing status, deductions, credits, other income, and current tax law.

A winner may therefore owe additional tax or have withholding reconciled when filing the applicable tax return.

Important Notes

  • The calculator estimates the lump-sum cash option only and does not calculate an annuity payment schedule.
  • The advertised jackpot and immediate cash option can be substantially different amounts.
  • The federal tax field is a user-entered estimate and should not automatically be treated as the current withholding rate or final marginal tax rate.
  • State treatment varies by jurisdiction. Residency, where the ticket was purchased, and nonresident tax rules may affect actual state tax.
  • City or local income taxes are not automatically included.
  • The calculator does not apply progressive federal or state tax brackets.
  • Filing status, deductions, credits, estimated-tax requirements, multiple winners, trusts, gifts, and estate-planning issues are not modeled.
  • For a significant lottery prize, confirm the payout and tax consequences with the official lottery and qualified tax and legal professionals before making major financial decisions.
