Pace, Time and Distance Formulas
Pace represents the time required to cover one unit of distance.
Pace = total time ÷ distance
To estimate total time from a target pace:
Time = pace × distance
To estimate distance from time and pace:
Distance = total time ÷ pace
Convert hours, minutes, and seconds to one consistent unit before performing the calculation:
Total seconds = hours × 3,600 + minutes × 60 + seconds
Pace and Speed Conversion
Pace measures time per unit of distance, while speed measures distance per unit of time.
Speed in km/h = 60 ÷ pace in min/km
Speed in mph = 60 ÷ pace in min/mile
A lower pace value represents faster movement. For example, 5:00 min/km is faster than 6:00 min/km.
Min/Km and Min/Mile Conversion
One international mile equals exactly 1.609344 kilometers.
Min/mile = min/km × 1.609344
Min/km = min/mile ÷ 1.609344
For greater accuracy, convert pace to total seconds before applying the conversion, then convert the result back to minutes and seconds.
Worked Example
Suppose you complete 10 kilometers in 52 minutes 30 seconds.
Convert the time to seconds:
52 × 60 + 30 = 3,150 seconds
Calculate pace per kilometer:
3,150 ÷ 10 = 315 seconds per kilometer
315 seconds = 5 minutes 15 seconds
The average pace is therefore:
5:15 min/km
Convert that pace to minutes per mile:
315 × 1.609344 ≈ 506.94 seconds per mile
506.94 seconds ≈ 8 minutes 27 seconds
The equivalent pace is approximately:
8:27 min/mile
The corresponding average speed is:
60 ÷ 5.25 ≈ 11.43 km/h

- Average pace may hide faster and slower splits, intervals, recovery periods, or changes in terrain.
