The Surface Area Calculator totals the outside faces of a three-dimensional solid. Depending on the problem, you may need total area, lateral area only, or exposed area after bases, openings, or joined faces are excluded.
Total, lateral, and exposed area
A rectangular prism uses 2(lw+lh+wh), a sphere 4πr², and a closed cylinder 2πr²+2πrh. A cone’s lateral area uses slant height, unlike its volume formula, which uses perpendicular height.
Surface area is the sum of all exposed faces; for a rectangular prism SA=2(lw+lh+wh), and for a sphere SA=4πr².

Choose the solid and decide which faces are actually included. Enter all lengths in one unit, distinguish radius from diameter, and calculate shared or open faces separately before rounding.

A compact example
A cube with side 3 cm has surface area 6×9=54 cm².
Valid inputs and boundary cases
Dimensions must be nonnegative. Nets, frustums, hollow solids, and composite objects may require several formulas. An open container does not include the missing lid, and joined solids should not count their internal contact surfaces.

Exclude or include bases and openings according to the physical object, and use squared units.
An independent check
Imagine or draw the unfolded net and account for every exposed face once. Check that the answer has square units and that it is smaller than or equal to an appropriate bounding collection of faces.

What this numerical result cannot decide
Surface area alone does not determine coating quantity or heat transfer. Coverage, texture, thickness, overlap, openings, emissivity, and boundary conditions can materially change a real estimate.
A second way to understand the method
For a cylinder, lateral area is the curved rectangle 2πrh. Adding two circular bases gives total area 2πrh+2πr². A label may use only lateral area, while painting a closed tank could require all exposed surfaces. Define the boundary before selecting the formula.
Composite solids hide contact faces
When two prisms are joined, the touching rectangle appears on both individual surface-area totals but is not exposed in the combined solid. Subtract that contact area twice after adding the separate totals. Openings and cutouts may remove one face while adding new interior edge surfaces, so a sketch is essential.
Coverage converts area into material quantity
Paint, coating, insulation, and wrapping estimates start with exposed area but also require product coverage, coats, overlap, texture, and waste. Calculate each material zone separately and use the manufacturer’s stated coverage. Surface geometry supplies the base measurement; it does not replace an installation or purchasing plan.
Scale changes area quadratically
If every dimension of a solid is multiplied by k, its surface area is multiplied by k². A model enlarged by a factor of three therefore has nine times the surface area, not three times. This scaling check can expose a missing squared dimension in a formula.
Nets make hidden faces visible
Sketching an unfolded net turns a 3D boundary into familiar 2D pieces. Label congruent faces and mark any omitted base, opening, or shared contact surface before adding. The net also helps distinguish lateral area from total area.
