How a repeating block becomes a fraction

For a terminating decimal, write the digits as an integer over a power of ten and reduce. For example, 0.375=375/1000=3/8. A value greater than 1 may remain an improper fraction or be reported as a mixed number.

What this numerical result cannot decide

Many different fractions round to the same displayed decimal. Without knowing whether the source value terminates, repeats, or was measured, the calculator cannot reconstruct more precision than was entered.

A second way to understand the method

Let x=0.272727… . Multiplying by 100 shifts one two-digit repeat: 100x=27.272727… . Subtracting x removes the repeating tail, giving 99x=27 and x=27/99=3/11. Longer nonrepeating prefixes require an additional shift before subtraction.

Terminating decimals come from place value

The last written decimal place determines the initial denominator: tenths use 10, hundredths 100, thousandths 1,000, and so on. Thus 2.045 becomes 2045/1000 and reduces to 409/200. The zero between 2 and 4 matters because it fixes the place value of the remaining digits.

Measured decimals may need a tolerance instead

If 1.27 m came from a measurement rounded to the nearest hundredth, it represents an interval near that value rather than the exact rational number 127/100. Converting the displayed value is still mathematically valid, but engineering or scientific work should retain the measurement precision and uncertainty instead of implying an exact ratio.

Yes. It begins as 5/10 and reduces by dividing both parts by 5.

Why does 0.333 become 333/1000?

Because a terminating entry has three decimal places; it is not the same as an infinite repeating 3.

Yes. Convert the absolute value, reduce it, and keep one negative sign.
