What unit conversion does—and does not—change
Converting a lipid result changes its numerical scale and unit label, not the underlying blood concentration. A result can therefore appear very different after conversion while representing exactly the same specimen. Keep the analyte name, collection date, fasting status and original unit beside the converted value so that context is not lost. Non-HDL cholesterol, cholesterol ratios and estimated cardiovascular risk are separate calculations; they should not be produced merely by changing units.
Practical example with reverse checking
Suppose a report lists LDL cholesterol as 130 mg/dL. Multiplying by 0.02586 gives approximately 3.36 mmol/L. To check the arithmetic, divide 3.36 by 0.02586; the small difference from 130 comes from rounding. For triglycerides, use the triglyceride factor instead. A reverse check is especially helpful when results are copied between portals that use different national reporting conventions.
Keep a reliable lipid record
When tracking results, record total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglycerides as separate lines. Note whether the laboratory calculated or directly measured LDL, because this can affect comparisons even when units match. Use the same unit across a chart or spreadsheet, retain the unrounded source value, and convert historical results only once. Trends are most meaningful when testing circumstances and laboratory methods are reasonably comparable.
