The Hiking Calorie Calculator estimates energy expenditure from body weight, moving time, distance, elevation gain, terrain and pack load. Those inputs distinguish a flat walk from a steep, technical or loaded hike that takes the same number of hours.
Describe the hike you actually completed
Use active hiking time when breaks are long enough to change the average workload. Enter total ascent rather than the highest elevation on the route. A trail that begins at 1,000 meters and tops out at 1,500 meters has 500 meters of net gain, but repeated climbs may produce much more cumulative ascent.
Select terrain and pack categories conservatively. A light daypack should not be entered as an expedition load, and one rocky section should not define an otherwise smooth route.
How the calorie estimate is assembled
The calculation begins with a MET category and the relationship calories = MET × 3.5 × weight in kg × minutes ÷ 200. Elevation, terrain and backpack choices adjust the intensity assumption used by the tool.
MET tables describe average energy cost across groups. Fitness, gait, temperature, altitude and downhill technique make an individual’s true expenditure different.
Elevation gain changes more than pace
Climbing requires work against gravity and often slows speed even as effort rises. Descending usually costs less energy than climbing but can still be demanding on steep or unstable ground. A route’s average speed alone therefore cannot capture workload.
Backpack weight belongs in context
A heavier pack raises the mass moved, but fit and terrain also matter. Enter the carried pack separately if the calculator provides that field rather than adding it to body weight. Water consumed during a long hike means pack mass also changes over time.
Worked comparison: trail walk versus climb
Consider a 70 kg hiker moving for two hours. A smooth, mostly level trail will use a lower intensity assumption than two hours with 600 meters of ascent and a loaded pack. Running both scenarios shows why duration alone can understate demanding routes.
If the hike included a long flat approach and a steep climb, calculate each segment separately and add the estimates for a more transparent total.
Separate fueling from the displayed total
A calorie estimate does not state how much food must be carried or eaten during the route. Duration, intensity, temperature, individual tolerance and access to later meals all affect a fueling plan. For remote or very long hikes, use established outdoor guidance and personal experience instead of subtracting the calculator result from a daily diet target.
Likewise, calorie expenditure cannot determine fluid or electrolyte needs. Treat hydration, fueling and route safety as separate planning questions.

What calories cannot tell you about a hike
The estimate does not predict hydration, food timing, heat illness, altitude illness or whether a route is safe. Weather, daylight, navigation skills and emergency preparation require separate planning.

MET-based equations commonly estimate gross expenditure. A wearable may report active calories, so check definitions before comparing totals.
Should I include downhill distance?
Yes, include the whole route distance and moving time. Total ascent and terrain help distinguish its difficulty.
Why is my GPS watch different?
It may use heart rate, personal calibration and its own elevation corrections. Both outputs remain estimates.
