Keep the sign consistent; a negative mixed number conventionally applies the negative sign to the entire value.
An independent check
Convert the final mixed number back to an improper fraction and compare it with the reduced result. A decimal estimate is helpful: 3 1/2 is 3.5, so adding 1 3/4 should produce a value a little above 5.

Mixed-number notation is convenient for reporting measurements but improper fractions are safer during calculation. The calculator cannot decide the correct measurement unit, rounding rule, or whether a remainder should be expressed as a fraction.
A second way to understand the method
When the fractional part of the first mixed number is smaller than the fraction being subtracted, borrow one whole. That whole becomes a fraction equal to the denominator, such as 1=4/4. Thus 5 1/4 can be rewritten as 4 5/4 without changing its value, allowing the fractional subtraction to proceed.
Multiplication and division do not use the whole parts separately
Convert every mixed number first. For example, 2 1/3×1 1/2 becomes 7/3×3/2, which reduces to 7/2 or 3 1/2. Multiplying the whole numbers and fractional parts independently would miss the cross-products contained in the actual values.
Choose the reporting form that fits the task
Improper fractions are usually clearest during algebra, while mixed numbers often read naturally for lengths, time, and quantities. A decimal may be useful for a device setting. These forms can represent the same value, but rounding a decimal can make it only approximate. Keep the reduced fraction when an exact answer is important.
