Walking Calorie Calculation

The calculator first determines walking speed. If distance and time are entered:

Speed = distance ÷ time

Speed is then converted to meters per minute for the walking equation.

km/h to m/min = km/h × 1,000 ÷ 60

mph to m/min ≈ mph × 26.8224

Incline is entered as a percentage and converted to decimal form:

Grade decimal = grade % ÷ 100

Walking Metabolic Equation

The calculator uses an ACSM-style walking equation:

VO₂ = 3.5 + (0.1 × speed) + (1.8 × speed × grade)

Where:

  • VO₂ = estimated oxygen cost in ml/kg/min
  • Speed = walking speed in meters per minute
  • Grade = incline expressed as a decimal

Estimated METs are:

METs = VO₂ ÷ 3.5

Calories per minute are then estimated as:

kcal/min = METs × 3.5 × body weight in kg ÷ 200

Finally:

Total calories = kcal/min × walking duration in minutes

Suppose a person weighs 70 kg and walks at 5 km/h for 30 minutes on a 5% incline.

Convert speed:

5 × 1,000 ÷ 60 ≈ 83.33 m/min

Convert grade:

5% = 0.05

Estimate oxygen cost:

VO₂ = 3.5 + (0.1 × 83.33) + (1.8 × 83.33 × 0.05)

VO₂ ≈ 19.33 ml/kg/min

Convert to METs:

19.33 ÷ 3.5 ≈ 5.52 METs

Estimated calories per minute:

5.52 × 3.5 × 70 ÷ 200 ≈ 6.76 kcal/min

Total estimated calories:

6.76 × 30 ≈ 203 kcal

Under these assumptions, the estimated gross energy expenditure is approximately 203 kcal.

Gross vs. Active Calories

This calculator estimates gross calories, which include the energy your body would have used at rest during the walking period.
