Maximum Heart Rate Estimate

If you do not enter a measured maximum heart rate, the calculator uses:

Estimated maximum heart rate = 220 − age

This is a simple age-based estimate and may differ from your actual maximum heart rate. A reliable custom value may be used when it comes from appropriate exercise testing or professional guidance.

Percentage of Maximum Heart Rate Method

This method calculates each zone directly from maximum heart rate:

Zone heart rate = maximum heart rate × intensity percentage

The calculator uses these five ranges:

  • Zone 1: 50–60% — recovery and very easy activity
  • Zone 2: 60–70% — easy aerobic and endurance activity
  • Zone 3: 70–80% — moderate-to-hard tempo activity
  • Zone 4: 80–90% — hard or threshold-oriented activity
  • Zone 5: 90–100% — very hard, usually short-duration efforts

Karvonen Heart-Rate Reserve Method

The Karvonen method includes resting heart rate.

Heart-rate reserve = maximum heart rate − resting heart rate

Target heart rate = resting heart rate + (intensity percentage × heart-rate reserve)

Because this method accounts for the difference between resting and maximum heart rate, it can produce different zone ranges from the percentage-of-maximum method.

Worked Example

Suppose a person is 30 years old with a resting heart rate of 60 bpm.

Estimated maximum heart rate:

220 − 30 = 190 bpm

Using the percentage-of-maximum method, Zone 2 is:

190 × 60% = 114 bpm

190 × 70% = 133 bpm

Estimated Zone 2: 114–133 bpm

Using the Karvonen method:

Heart-rate reserve = 190 − 60 = 130 bpm

Lower Zone 2 limit:

60 + (130 × 60%) = 138 bpm

Upper Zone 2 limit:

60 + (130 × 70%) = 151 bpm

Estimated Karvonen Zone 2: 138–151 bpm

The difference does not mean one result is universally correct. The methods define intensity differently and both depend on the accuracy of the maximum and resting heart rates used.

The American Heart Association describes moderate-intensity activity as approximately 50–70% of maximum heart rate and vigorous activity as approximately 70–85%.
