Pixels to Inches Converter

Convert between pixels and inches using your display's PPI.

Important Note : The same pixel value can equal very different physical sizes depending on the PPI. Pixels to inches is not a fixed conversion unless PPI is known.

Use this Pixels to Inches Converter to switch between pixel dimensions and physical inches using your chosen PPI (pixels per inch). It is useful for print sizing, design work, image planning, and checking how large a digital image will appear at a given resolution.

What This Pixels to Inches Converter Calculates

This calculator converts between:

  • Pixels to inches
  • Inches to pixels

It uses one key setting:

  • PPI (pixels per inch)

The live tool is designed for cases where you know the pixel count and want the physical size, or you know the physical size and want the required pixel count.

How the Pixels to Inches Converter Works

The key idea is simple:

PPI = pixels ÷ inches

From that, you can rearrange the relationship in two useful ways:

Inches = pixels ÷ PPI

Pixels = inches × PPI

This means pixels and inches do not have a fixed one-step conversion by themselves. You must also know the PPI.

Why PPI Matters

A pixel is a digital unit, not a fixed physical size. The physical size only becomes meaningful when you decide how many pixels are packed into each inch.

For example:

  • at 100 PPI, 1000 pixels = 10 inches
  • at 200 PPI, 1000 pixels = 5 inches
  • at 300 PPI, 1000 pixels = 3.33 inches

Same pixel count, different physical size — because the PPI changed.

Common PPI Use Cases

  • Web and screen work: often associated with lower PPI assumptions such as 72 PPI or device-specific screen density
  • High-quality print: commonly planned around 300 PPI
  • General design planning: depends on the final output device and required sharpness

The correct PPI depends on where and how the image will be used.

Assumptions and Important Notes

  • This calculator only gives a correct physical-size result when the PPI is known or intentionally chosen.
  • The same image can have the same pixel dimensions but a different printed size depending on the assigned PPI.
  • For screen viewing, actual display size can also depend on the device’s real screen density and scaling behavior.
  • For print work, higher PPI generally means more detail, but it also depends on the final viewing distance and print requirements.

Worked Example

Suppose an image is 2400 pixels wide and you want to know how wide it will print at 300 PPI.

Step 1: Use the inches formula
Inches = pixels ÷ PPI

Step 2: Substitute the values
Inches = 2400 ÷ 300

Step 3: Calculate
Inches = 8 inches

So a 2400-pixel-wide image prints at 8 inches wide when set to 300 PPI.

Now suppose you want an image that prints 5 inches wide at 300 PPI.

Step 1: Use the pixels formula
Pixels = inches × PPI

Step 2: Substitute the values
Pixels = 5 × 300

Step 3: Calculate
Pixels = 1500 pixels

How to Use This Pixels to Inches Converter

  1. Enter the known pixel value or inch value.
  2. Enter the PPI you want to use.
  3. Convert from pixels to inches or inches to pixels.
  4. Review the result based on the selected PPI.

How to Interpret the Result

Pixels to inches tells you how large an image will be physically at the chosen PPI.

Inches to pixels tells you how many pixels you need to achieve a desired physical size at the chosen PPI.

If you change the PPI, the inch result changes too. That is normal and is the whole point of the conversion.

Practical Uses of a Pixels to Inches Converter

  • check print size before sending artwork to print
  • plan image dimensions for posters, flyers, or photos
  • convert desired inches into required pixel dimensions
  • understand how PPI changes physical output size
