Important Limitations
HEIC and HEIF files are not supported by the current browser-native converter. AVIF and ICO input support depends on the browser.
Animated GIFs are converted as still images, and SVG files become raster images when exported as JPG, PNG, or WebP.
Conversion may remove EXIF, GPS, color-profile, and other metadata. Keep the original file when metadata, vector structure, animation, or professional color management is important.
Choose JPG, PNG, or WebP
JPG suits photographs and broad compatibility but has no transparency. PNG suits screenshots, diagrams, logos, and alpha transparency. WebP supports transparency and can provide efficient modern delivery. Compare the real outputs because no extension guarantees the smallest file.
Resize for the Intended Display
Reducing pixel dimensions can save more bytes than changing quality alone. A camera image several thousand pixels wide is usually unnecessary in a modest content column. Choose dimensions that cover the largest real display size, including high-density screens when relevant, without sending far more pixels than the layout uses.
Keep the original aspect ratio unless deliberate cropping is required. Enlarging a small source creates additional pixels through interpolation but cannot restore detail that was never captured. Upscaling can make blur and compression artifacts more visible.
Quality and Visual Inspection
Lossy quality settings trade file size against visible fidelity. Lower values may create blocks, ringing near edges, softened texture, banding in gradients, or color smearing around text. The same number can behave differently across formats, browsers, and image subjects.
Test more than one setting on faces, fine texture, gradients, logos, and small high-contrast text. Inspect at the final display size and at 100% zoom. The correct result is the smallest file that still meets the destination’s visual requirements.
Practical Example
For a transparent logo, choose PNG or WebP and verify the edges against the real page background. For a gallery of photos, apply consistent dimensions and compare JPG and WebP quality before converting the full batch.
Transparency and Backgrounds
PNG and WebP can store transparent pixels; JPEG cannot. When exporting a transparent source to JPEG, choose a background color that matches the destination. Otherwise a logo may display an unwanted rectangle. Inspect alpha edges on both light and dark backgrounds because antialiasing can reveal a fringe.
Metadata and Format Limitations
SVG input becomes a raster image at the exported dimensions, and animated GIF input becomes a still frame. AVIF and ICO input support can vary by browser. Browser-canvas export may remove EXIF camera information, GPS coordinates, embedded thumbnails, color profiles, and other metadata. Keep the original whenever archival details, animation, vector structure, or professional color management matters.

Privacy and Browser Performance

Large images can consume substantially more memory after decoding than their compressed file size suggests. If a batch stalls, process fewer files together, reduce dimensions, or close other tabs. Mobile devices and low-memory computers may reach browser limits sooner.

Downloading a new file does not update WordPress, HTML, CSS, a CDN, or responsive image references automatically. Upload the result, update every intended reference, preserve descriptive alternative text, and confirm that the server returns the correct content type. Add width and height attributes where appropriate to reserve layout space.
Test the finished page on phone and desktop. File format is only one performance factor; rendered dimensions, responsive sources, caching, lazy loading, and whether the image is initially visible also matter.

Plan the Output Before Processing
Define where the new image will appear, its maximum rendered dimensions, whether transparency is required, and which browsers or applications must open it. A file for a product grid has different priorities from an archival master, printable graphic, email attachment, or social card. Starting with the destination prevents unnecessary resizing and repeated lossy exports.
When converting a mixed batch, separate photographs from logos and screenshots so each group can use appropriate dimensions, transparency, background, and quality. Applying one setting blindly to unrelated files produces inconsistent results.
Compare Results Consistently
Use the same crop and pixel dimensions when comparing formats or quality settings. Record the resulting file size and inspect the image on the intended background. A tiny saving is not worthwhile if it damages a logo, face, gradient, or small text. Conversely, sending a much larger file does not improve an image beyond the detail users can actually see.
Keep one untouched master and create named derivatives for publishing. Include useful subject or size information in filenames without exposing private data. After replacement, check caching, broken URLs, captions, attribution, structured data, and any page that reuses the asset.
