A kinetic energy calculator finds the energy of translational motion from mass and speed. It can also rearrange the equation to solve for mass or speed when the other quantities are known.
Kinetic Energy Calculator Formula and Units
KE = ½mv². In SI, mass is kilograms, speed is metres per second and energy is joules.
Kinetic Energy Calculator: Why Speed Is Squared
Doubling speed multiplies kinetic energy by four when mass stays constant. Tripling speed multiplies it by nine, which is why unit and decimal errors in velocity have a large effect.
Worked example
A 1,200 kg vehicle moving at 20 m/s has KE = 0.5 × 1,200 × 20² = 240,000 J, or 240 kJ.
Use speed magnitude
For ordinary translational kinetic energy, direction does not change the value because velocity is squared. The energy is nonnegative in this classical model.
Classical-model limits
The equation assumes speeds far below the speed of light and treats the object’s mass as constant. Rotation, deformation, heat and internal motion require separate energy terms.
Measurement and reporting
Convert all units before substitution, keep unrounded velocity through the square, and round the final result to match meaningful input precision.
Why braking distance grows quickly with speed
Because kinetic energy depends on speed squared, a vehicle moving twice as fast carries four times the translational kinetic energy at the same mass. Stopping that motion requires energy transfer through brakes, tires, road and air resistance. Real stopping distance also includes reaction time and changes in traction, so KE alone is not a road-safety predictor.
Kinetic energy and momentum
Momentum is p = mv, while kinetic energy is ½mv². Momentum is a vector and scales directly with speed; kinetic energy is a scalar and scales with the square. Collisions may conserve total momentum while kinetic energy changes into heat, sound and deformation, so the two quantities answer different questions.
Rotating and rolling objects
A rolling wheel can have translational kinetic energy of its center of mass plus rotational kinetic energy about its axis. The simple calculator covers only the term selected by its inputs. Motors, flywheels and rolling vehicles may require moments of inertia and angular velocity as additional information.
Reverse solving for speed
From KE = ½mv², speed is v = √(2KE/m). Use the positive magnitude unless the problem separately asks for direction. A negative energy entry or zero mass is not valid in the classical translational formula. Check units before taking the square root.
Reliable calculation checklist
- Convert grams or tonnes to kilograms.
- Convert km/h to m/s before using SI joules.
- Square the full unrounded speed.
- Separate translational and rotational energy.
- State assumptions about the classical model.
For microscopic particles near light speed, relativistic equations are required. For everyday objects, ½mv² is normally appropriate when mass and speed are measured reliably.
Energy units beyond joules
Large results may be clearer in kilojoules or megajoules, while some applications use watt-hours or calories. Convert only after calculating in a consistent system: 1 kJ equals 1,000 J. Do not confuse power units such as watts with energy units. A device rated in watts needs an operating time before its energy transfer can be compared with kinetic energy. Label every converted result so a bare number is never mistaken for joules. Retain the original SI answer for checking.
kinetic energy calculator FAQs
Can kinetic energy be negative?
Not in the classical formula ½mv².
What happens if mass doubles?
Kinetic energy doubles if speed is unchanged.
Is kinetic energy the same as momentum?
No. Momentum is mv and includes direction; kinetic energy is ½mv².
